The main goal of this study is to generate more evidence to improve management of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS).
NORDSTEN network is led by project administrator Erland Hermansen MD PhD, Norwegian University of Technology and Science and the study administration consists of an administrative group, scientific steering committee and working group to facilitate the NORDSTEN study.
The study consists of three sub trials:
A
Spinal Stenosis Trial (NORDSTEN-SST) patients randomized trial to three different minimal invasive posterior decompression techniques: Led by Erland Hermansen, M.D., Møre and Romsdal Hospital Trust. The main goal is to evaluate clinical and radiological differences between three three surgical techniques, and to quantify the extent of the decompression needed.
Unilateral laminotomy with crossover
Bilateral laminotomy
Spinous process osteotomyB
Degenerative Spondylolisthesis Trial (NORDSTEN-DS) patients with LSS and concurrent degenerative
spondylolisthesis were randomized to surgical decompression alone (DA) or decompression with instrumental fusion (DF). Led by Ivar Austevoll, M.D., Haukeland University Hospital. The main goal is to compare the clinical results in decompression alone (DA) versus decompression with fusion.
Decompression alone
Decompression with fusion C
Observational Cohort (NORDSTEN-OC) we followed the patients with radiographic and symptomatic LSS with and without DS, who had symptom burden judged not severe enough to opt for surgical treatment. Led by Frode Rekeland, Ph.D Student, Haukeland University Hospital. The main goal of the OC is to monitor the clinical course of the LSS patient.
